"Holy shit"
He gaped open mouthed
"It can talk!"

Mei could hardly believe her own eyes either.
"No way. This has GOT to be a joke..."

The look on Blake's face could only be described as utter astonishment.
"I've seen some pretty crazy shit, but nothing like this. So our kidnapper is forcing a talking monkey to come and join a group of eight strangers in space. This could be a solid sitcom."

Feeling like an idiot, Fox attempted to test the theory
"Um.... Saru? How did you get here?"
Looking at the others he shrugged
"Maybe it's said all it can say?"

"I was eating banana. Then man in mask... big man in mask. Lots of white and I fall asleep. Ook ook."
The monkey looked down at his empty hand, as if to grieve the banana he lost.

Wataru placed his hand on his hat in thought.
"A man in a mask, huh? Sounds like he and I had the same experience."

"Yeah.... I saw him too"
Fox stared at Saru
"Okay I gotta say it, how can this monkey speak a human language? I've read about how chimps can learn sign language and even converse with people that way but this...."

"...I believe I can answer that."
Hidemi had barely said a word since she first introduced herself.
"There is a zoo, a few cities down from where I live. I haven't been there personally, but I believe it became popular for a certain exhibit involving a primate who learned to speak."
She continued to recall what she knew.
"They say the monkey would show off by pointing at people and naming what clothing they were wearing, or telling them what time it was. Of course... his first word was 'banana'. Naturally, it wasn't long before the zoo owner decided to capitalize on this, and now the monkey is forced to do shows on a weekly basis."

Nona looked blankly at the monkey.
"Huh. I've never heard of that."

Fox mused on this
"So, was Saru the monkey? Or just another one that's defied evolution? Geez this is unbelievable."

At that moment, the lights grew dim. The screens across all the walls in the room began to light up. What appeared in the many images surrounding the nine people, was a familiar face... "Greetings, players... and people all over Japan. I have interrupted this broadcast to bring you... the Nonary Channel. I shall be your host... Lord Zero."

"Wha...!?"
Mei gasped in surprise at the masked figure's sudden appearance on the screen.

Fox flinched when he saw the image. His listened with barely controlled rage as he listened to the voice.
"That's the guy... that's the freak that kidnapped me!"

Blake's face remained a cold glare at the enigmatic masked figure.
"You...I recognize you. What did you say about this being broadcast? And this is a game to you?!"

The masked figure's eerie voice continued.
"No doubt, you are all wondering why I have removed you from your habitats, and brought you aboard this vessel. You have all been chosen to play a game. The Nonary game. It is a game... where you will put your life on the line."
As the voice finished, the screens changed to display Earth, surrounded by satellites.
"As I speak, you are all being broadcasted live, to televisions all over Japan. The winner of this game shall receive fame and fortune. Millions of eyes are upon you."

Nona's eyes darted around, looking for a camera in the room.

Fox gazed in wonder at the screens showing his home. So, his parents.. and Kaz they were at home right now? Sitting in the lounge watching him float around in a space station with a bunch of strangers and a monkey?!
"What the hell are you talking about?"

A camera noticeably turned and faced Fox as he asked this.
"The objective of this game is simple: Leave this space ship alive. Your bracelets shall determine your fate."

Fox looked down at his bracelet. The screen still showed the same number.
9
Nine?
What could this number mean? He turned to watch his fellow compatriots in misery check their bracelets.

The screens on the walls changed again, to display an image of a bracelet.
"By now, you must have noticed the number on each of your bracelets... We will call the value of this number your "Life Points", or "LP" for short. It represents how many hours you have to live."

Blake turned to face his bracelet.
"So that's what these things do, huh? They determine how long we have...to live."
The expression on his face quickly darkened, but then reshaped once more to suit his more sarcastic self.
"That's reassuring. Well, at least if I die here, millions of people will be watching me. I'll have to go out with a bang."

Wataru looked skeptical.
"So, what? You mean to tell us that we're all gonna drop dead, if we don't get out of here in 9 hours?"

"That is precisely what will happen."
A light turned on, and flashed on an air vent, which protruded from the ceiling.
"From before the moment you all awoke, this ship has been filled to the brim with a toxic gas. This toxin is a gaseous form of the drug known as tubocurarine. It is a muscle relaxant, fully capable of numbing your respiratory muscles in a large enough dose. With every breath, you are exposing your lungs more and more to this drug."
"The bracelets around your arms contain neostigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor. It serves as an antidote for the tubocurarine. Every 90 seconds, each bracelet injects its wearer with a small dose of this antidote. However, should the number on a bracelet reach zero, it will release itself from your arm, and retract its needle, leaving you to asphyxiate."

Mei stared down at her bracelet. She held it tightly, as if she felt like it would fall off at any minute.
"No way... dis is... dis is fucking insane!"

Blake was close to laughing at Zero.
"Really? You expect us to believe all of this? If that's the case, how did we not notice our wrists were constantly being injected? I would think that would be a pretty noticeable pain, at least for the first few times."

Post by Zero on May 25, 2013 13:42:08 GMT -5
The light turned off, returning focus to the screens around the room. The screen continued to display the bracelet on it.
"That is simple. The needles have been stuck snuggly under your skin for longer than you can imagine. It is no more painful than a harmless shot at a doctor visit."

Nona joked, to forget her own fear.
"Seriously Blake? Don't tell me you actually think shots are painful..."

Fox hadn't taken his eyes off of his bracelet throughout this exchange. His hopes had been momentarily raised and then quashed by Blake's theory and it's response.
"Why?"
He barely croaked out the word before clearing his throat and glared at the screen
"Why are you doing this? Why did you take us in particular and why the hell are you broadcasting it coast to coast? You a wanna be film maker is that it?"

Blake turned his head to avoid facing Nona.
"I...don't do well with needles- Look, Zero, or whatever you are, how the hell are you broadcasting this "game" to all of Japan? Obviously this wouldn't go over well with anyone. The Japanese government might even get involved."
